Which CAN bus does the HINO 500 use?

Yeah. Simple answer for a simple question. HINO 500 trucks generally use the SAE J1939 for the CAN bus. It's for standardization and it's really reliable too.

It's pretty standard for medium and heavy-duty trucks these days. Some older models or specific markets might have variations, which could explain the conflicting info you're seeing online but if it's a recent-ish model, J1939 is almost definitely what it runs on

yeah, J1939 is the standard for most modern heavy duty commercial vehicles, so it would be unusual for a post 2004 HINO 500 not to use it.
To be 100% sure, OP can check the diagnostic port. If it's a 9 pin Deutsch connector (the round one), pins C and D are almost always your J1939 CAN High and Low.
You can often see the wiring in those pins. The conflicting info OP seeing online might be due to different market versions or model years, or maybe even an older chassis

I'm curious, if it isn't J1939, what protocol would a post-2004 HINO 500 possibly use instead? And for mixed fleets, does anyone run into compatibility issues when scanning across different brands or years?
